Finance and Funding: Essential for Net Zero

Events

Greenbackers Investment Capital is bringing its 2022 Global Climate Tech Tour to the All-Energy /Dcarbonise conference in Glasgow on 11 May. Their 2022 programme builds on their widely acclaimed 26ForCOP26 programme in Glasgow last November at the time of the COP26 Summit and once again selects the most investable early-stage climate technology ventures and helps them secure growth funding from their proven global climate tech investor base.

Wednesday’s finance and funding afternoon begins with ‘Investment for net zero’ an hour-long panel discussion focusing on those early-stage technologies, routes to market and the changing role and timing of the difference sources of finance and funding. Chaired by Andrew Smith, a Greenbackers Partner, it features Paul Padaruth, Head of Commercial, Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund; Mark Munro, Executive Director Sustainable Investment, Scottish National Investment Bank; John Young, CEO, Strategic Growth Services; Beverley Gower-Jones, Managing Partner of the Clean Growth Fund; Mathew Clayton, Managing Director of Thrive Renewables; and Stuart Turl, Business Development Director – Energy Transition EMEA, Wood Group. Each will give a short introduction and then the discussion begins. This is followed by a half hour networking session.

Greenbackers’ Founding Partner Robert Hokin commented:

“All-Energy is one of the premier energy industry events on the global calendar and we are delighted to be able to bring our Climate Tech Tour back to Glasgow at this event.”

Jonathan Heastie, Portfolio Director, Energy & Marine, RX Global, owners and organisers of the event explained:

This is just one part of what is going to be a highly informative and exciting afternoon; we are delighted to have this strong financial and funding programme as an integral part of All-Energy and Dcarbonise. Andrew Smith of Greenbackers has long chaired our finance and funding session at All-Energy, this lifts it to a new level, especially as the Super Pitch will be live streamed globally.”

At 15:30 Round 1 of the Greenbackers Super Pitch gets under way with the first tranche of climate tech ventures pitching for investment in a session hosted by Andrew Smith and Mark Hannigan, Partner and Head of Clean Energy at Greenbackers, and live streamed to a global audience. The full list of companies pitching can be found, with brief descriptions, at https://tinyurl.com/d7rttdf8.

From 16:15-16:30 the focus is on ‘The intersection of new climate technology and the offshore sector’ when Andrew Smith settles down to have a ‘fireside chat’ with Clare Foster a Partner in the banking team and Head of Clean Energy at Shepherd and Wedderburn (All-Energy’s Headline Sponsor). She is widely recognised and a highly regarded practitioner in the project finance market, with a particular focus on power sector projects (particularly in the renewables arena) and infrastructure projects.

Then it is time for Round 2 of the Super Pitch. These enthusiastic and innovative companies as ‘programme participants’ are featured in Greenbackers exclusive online dealroom which currently has 300+ venture fund members and the participants also take part in the Global Climate Tech Tour with stops recently in Dubai, now Glasgow, then Amsterdam, USA, Canada, Cairo, and Singapore to come.

More expert input from both Clare Foster and Andrew Smith

Clare Foster chairs a panel discussion in the Finance and Funding track in the morning of 11 May at All-Energy /Dcarbonise, ‘The Great Decarbonisation Challenge – place-based solutions and mobilising finance’ sponsored by Shepherd and Wedderburn – looking at the How, Where, What (plus another ‘How’) and ‘When’ answer: of finance and funding for places.

She will be ably assisted by her panellists Polly Billington, Chief Executive of UK100; Jamie Brogan of the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, and, like Clare Foster, an Edinburgh Climate Commission Commissioner; and Professor Andy Gouldson, Lead Climate Advisor, UK Infrastructure Bank, and Co-lead ESRC Place-based Climate Action Network.

Andrew Smith meantime will be in conversation with two of Clare Foster’s Shepherd and Wedderburn colleagues – John Morrison (Corporate Finance) and Joe Fitzgerald (Intellectual Property) on key legal issues for clean tech start-ups on the road to commercialisation in ‘Powering your clean-tech start-up – from IPO rights to early-stage investment, legal insights on how to accelerate growth’ in the Offshore Wind show floor theatre on !1 May, sponsored by Shepherd and Wedderburn.

All-Energy, the history: This year marks All-Energy’s 21st Anniversary. The UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference has been held since February 2001; the first co-located Dcarbonise was held in 2019 embracing low carbon heat, energy efficiency and low carbon transport (the latter via the Smart Urban Mobility Solutions conference stream). The 2019 show attracted close to 8,000 attendees. The first 14 All-Energy events were held in Aberdeen; the show moved to Glasgow in 2015. During the COVID pandemic with no ‘in person’ show 42 webinars were staged attracting over 25,000 views.
