Celebrating RELX cares Month

September is RELX Cares Month when people across the RELX organisation unite to give back, lift others up, and celebrate the power of community. From fundraising and volunteering to two annual ‘Cares Days’ for every employee, we reveal how RXers worldwide are making a difference in ways big and small.
Recognising RXers who care
Each year, we celebrate employees who go above and beyond through the ‘Recognising Those Who Care Awards’. The impact of our two latest winners is nothing short of remarkable!
For over a decade, ReedPop’s Global Comic Talent Manager Mike Negin has been the driving force behind the St. Jude Charity Auctions at major comic conventions including New York Comic Con and Emerald City Comic Con. What began in 2011 as a solo initiative during his time as a contractor has grown into a powerful tradition that has raised over $1.4 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Mike tirelessly collects hundreds of pieces of original artwork from world-renowned artists and hosts auctions that have become fan favourites, raising over $100,000 in the past year alone. His efforts not only generate significant support for a vital cause but also boost attendance and engagement at RX events, attracting attendees, major artists, and partners like Marvel and DC. Through his work, Mike has fostered a sense of inclusivity and purpose within the comic community and inspired others at RX to explore charitable giving.
“The Charity Art Auction has been an amazing journey, working with St. Jude to help children and families get the treatment and support they need; I truly couldn’t think of a more worthy cause. It is a humbling experience to be recognized for my work with St. Jude, and I’m honored to receive the ‘Recognising those who care’ award. But I accept not only on my behalf, but for all of the artists, staff, crew, and fans that have made this an incredible experience, building a wonderful community brought together by their love of pop culture and the drive to do some good in the World. Our auction motto means a lot, now more than ever – Have Fun. Get art. Save Lives.” Mike Negin.
From the US to Brazil where, following the devastating May 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul affecting over 2.3 million people, the RX Brazil Cares Committee, led by Ana Dias, sprang into action. “Colleagues donated funds for 125 food baskets and collected hundreds of clothing items, which we sorted and distributed locally,” explained Ana. “We also partnered with exhibitors from our hospitality fairs, who provided 100 bed linen sets and 56 pallets of water, with RX covering those costs. Through swift action and broad collaboration, we were not only able to deliver vital aid, but also to demonstrate the strength of our community.”
Funding a brighter future for young people
Earlier this year, Cares Champions from RX and our sister companies voted to decide which worthy causes should receive support from RELX Cares’ central donations programme. We were delighted when two of our nominated charities – Beijing HOPE and the UK-based Young Citizens ̶ were awarded $12,000 each in July.
Established in 2009, Beijing HOPE (Horses Offering People Enrichment) is an equestrian therapy charity which offers young people with autism a safe space to gradually develop social and emotional connections, enhance their physical activity, and improve their overall well-being. As well as securing funding for the charity, volunteers from RX Greater China are always happy to assist with various tasks, such as cleaning the stables and walking the horses.
Young Citizens delivers inspiring citizenship education for young people in the UK. Their vision is a society where people are empowered to shape their communities and institutions to enable a thriving democracy. Our donation will help fund an exciting, soon-to-be-announced project to light the spark of active citizenship for children and young people, and help build the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to participate in society. Walking for Macmillan Cancer Support
Supporting people affected by cancer was at the heart of the second RELX Finance charity walk on 17 July, which saw 40 colleagues come together to raise £6,350 for Macmillan Cancer Support, including a matched contribution from our parent company, RELX.
The idea for the walk – a 17-mile sponsored relay along the River Thames, from the central London HQ of our parent company RELX to RX’s Richmond offices ̶ was conceived in 2024 by UK Hub Head of Accounting and Compliance, Corinne Crosnier. Corinne had lost family members to the disease, undergone her own medical investigations, and supported a colleague through her first round of treatment.
“When I first suggested a walk to raise funds for Macmillan, the RX Finance team responded with overwhelming enthusiasm,” said Corinne. “We wanted it to be inclusive, so we offered distances from five to fifteen miles and encouraged our RELX colleagues to use their RELX Cares leave to join us.”
That first year saw 28 participants and £5,000 raised. Encouraged by the response, the organising team took up the challenge again in 2025, smashing their £5,000 target. The second walk was marked by a special moment when all three walking groups met along the route. “It created such a sense of unity,” said Corinne. The team, including Aldene Geiling, Vino Krish, Tia O’Rourke, Celeste Kendell and Vincent O’Brien from RX, now hope to make the event an annual tradition, with future walks potentially supporting causes such as dementia care or mental health charities.
Taking action against drugs ̶ and heat!
This summer, colleagues from our Shenzhen office have been actively putting their volunteer hours into action to strengthen community bonds and spread positivity through action. In June, two volunteers joined an anti-drug education carnival at Luohu Middle School, using interactive games to explain the dangers of drugs, teach prevention skills, and help the teenage students build a solid safety defence against drugs on campus. Later in the summer, Shenzhen partnered with its property management company and neighbouring enterprises to launch the “Summer Cooling” campaign. Volunteers distributed free supplies ̶ including 100 pairs of arm coolers and two crates of purified water ̶ to sanitation workers, couriers, and food delivery riders, offering comfort and gratitude to the city’s guardians working under extreme heat.
Organising an ‘Rxtra Special Day’
Not even inclement weather can hold back RXers determined to give back. In July, well into the wet season in the Philippines, members of our Operations Support team braved the storms to organise an ‘Rxtra Special Day’ at their local Kaligayahan Elementary School. In partnership with the school’s teachers, the team organised an entertaining programme of activities for the 20+ children with special needs, including face painting, colouring exercises, games and trampolining. Tasty snacks ̶ popcorn, fries, corndogs and cotton candy snacks ̶ were provided for the children and their chaperones. And at the end of the fun-filled day they each received a tote bag, customised with their names and chosen designs, containing school supplies from RX and RELX donors.
Connected against hunger
RX France has partnered with the charity, Action Against Hunger for over 10 years, and their annual ‘Connected Against Hunger Challenge’ has become a ‘must-attend’ Cares event. This year, 60 RXers across 10 teams challenged themselves with sporting activities including walking, running, cycling and yoga, logging their efforts in the Connected Against Hunger app and earning points for their team in the process. In total RX France employees cycled 11,873 km, ran 9,365 km, and walked 6,279 km, raising over €19,200 - an all-time record!
Engaging with local school children
SEKAHIRA is a project conceived and initiated by our Japanese colleagues which creates space for employees to bond over shared hobbies and interests, and to engage with the local community. Among recent initiatives, 31 third-grade students (aged 9-10) from the local elementary school were invited to visit Food Tech Week/Drink JAPAN and tour the exhibition halls at Tokyo Big Sight with approximately 20 RX volunteers, engaging with exhibitors and completing fun 'missions.' Each RXer used their own expertise – whether in planning or on-site support – which also had a positive impact internally within RX.
“It had a revitalising effect, offering employees an opportunity to re-examine their own work and the exhibitions through the curious eyes of children,” revealed Hiroko. “It also enriched the image of exhibitions, a space typically reserved for adults, with many exhibitors commenting on the unique atmosphere created by the inclusion of the children.”
Dedicated to making a difference
Few RX teams dedicate more hours to their local community than our US colleagues. Last year they surpassed their goal of 800 volunteer hours, with 117 employees contributing 936 hours across initiatives tackling food insecurity, family support, and animal welfare! Now they are looking to go even further.
Among recent initiatives, the PGA Show team volunteered at the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary clearing one of the main pathways through the pollinator garden and removing invasive weeds. Elsewhere, 16 RXers, including several interns, enjoyed a beautiful morning at Kosciuszko Park on the waterfront in Stamford where the group removed 143 pounds of trash including hudreds of bottle caps, cans, mismatched socks, and a 50-pound mat!
Food insecurity touchesevery community, and on September 17 – Hunger Action Day – voluneers helped pack lunches for children in need at Norwalk, CT non-profit, Filling in the Blanks which fights childhood hunger by providing children with meals on the weekends. RXers were also encouraged to ‘donate their lunch’ (in the form of the equivalent cost) to the charity, and to donate requested food items for their local food bank in the four-week run up to Hunger Action Day.
